Press Release

The 2019 Hong Kong International Fur & Fashion Fair

Concluded with Success

The fur industry stands strong amidst global economic uncertainty with more diversified products targeting younger consumers

The four-day 2019 Hong Kong International Fur & Fashion Fair closed with success on 18 February 2019. This annual spectacular showcased the latest fur and fashion collections, premium raw materials, novel accessories and other products from over 180 exhibitors from 10 countries and regions. Attracting buyers from over 30 countries, the leading trade platform for premium fur products might see a total order confirmed of over US$80 million this year.

The uncertain global economic environment casts uncertainty on the export industry, and the fur industry is no exception. This year, industry players prepared themselves for the fair through important transformations. As the global fur market continues to evolve, the 2019 edition saw more diversified strategies and fashionable or casual lightweight designs tailored to younger customers. In addition, fur dressing sector also keeps abreast of the changes with raw material innovations. With cutting-edge technologies, mink fur products reveal opulent lustre and elegance, bringing new design possibilities. Industry players have also introduced different strategies to meet the ever-changing market needs and expand their business reach beyond a specific country or market.

While the number of buyers and visitors from certain markets declined, orders from China recorded a robust growth of 97%, reflecting the emergence of a new consumer community (comprising the upper middle class, affluent class, new-generation consumers and online buyers) as the country experiences rapid social and economic development. As local consumers are increasingly seeking personalized and unique offerings, China remains to be one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets, garnering the attention of the fur industry. Fur businesses have succeeded in tapping into the potential spending power of the Mainland market and are optimistic about the outlook. In addition, orders from Germany and Italy also experienced solid growth of 64% and 65% respectively, suggesting that the demand from traditional markets remain strong. Orders from countries like Turkey, Spain and Dubai also increased, manifesting consumers’ and international players’ recognition of Hong Kong’s high standards in fur production and processing which are comparable to or even surpass those in Italy. With their stylist fur designs, Hong Kong manufacturers have successfully gained the world’s attention.

Founded four decades ago, Hong Kong Fur Federation (HKFF) launched the Hong Kong International Fur & Fashion Fair in 1982. The fair is now regarded as a renowned trading platform for global industry where international buyers and exhibitors build close relationships and make remarkable sales every year. Mr. Wilson Chiu, Chairman of HKFF, noted, “Changes in the global market, such as the U.S.-China trade war, have inevitably affected the industry. But as one of the most unique fashion materials known for its traditional and exquisite craftsmanship, fur still maintains a strong market presence. Modern consumers look for high-quality materials, as well as individualistic, stylish and youthful designs. Fur, as a sustainable natural material is the ideal choice for those seeking a green lifestyle. To stay ahead of the game, exhibitors must be able to satisfy the needs of different target groups through accurate positioning and innovative ideas.”

Fur has evolved from a luxury material that can keep that chill out to a fashion staple with both style and functionality. Youthful, lightweight and comfortable designs with slimmer silhouettes have been introduced to attract young consumers. Experienced exhibitors also delighted buyers with more diversified offerings this year, presenting refreshing looks incorporating elements of a down jacket or fur parkas. Bold pop art was combined with traditional craftsmanship to create a playful look, while a creative palette gave the material a chic twist. Constantly pursuing innovation, the fur industry is ready to capture the market potential with full confidence.
