With inspiration drawn from far and wide, 29 young local design talents competed their daring furry thoughts at the upcoming Hong Kong Fur Design Competition. The annual Competition, organised by the Young Executive Committee (YEC) of the Hong Kong Fur Federation, took centre stage at the InterContinental Hong Kong on 7 January 2013.

"Since its inception, the Hong Kong Fur Design Competition has lived up to the objectives of the event – to promote the originality of fur fashion, ignite the interest in fur among local students, and nurturing new blood for the industry. And every year, our winners further take our distinctive 'Fur by Hong Kong' designs to the global front through taking part in international competitions," said Mr. Andy Sin, Chairman of YEC.

This year, the Competition drew in a submission of 269 sketches, and eventually 18 from the Full Fur Category and 11 from the Fur Combination Category were screened for the final judging. In the last two months, shortlisted designers worked closely with member manufacturers of the Hong Kong Fur Federation in making up their competing garments; a process in which contestants gained invaluable experience with keen support from the manufacturers to help them interpreting their imaginative concepts.

Every year it has not been an easy job for the panel to select the best among so many outstanding entries, with no exception to this edition. According to 'originality & creativity', 'commercial value & marketability', 'workmanship', 'application of fur materials', and 'overall design concept', seven prizes were given out for the Full Fur Category and Fur Combination Category, including the Commercial Award and "My Favorite Fur Sketch" voted by netizens on the Hong Kong Fur Design Competition's Facebook fan page.

Under the theme of event, 'Winter Princess', 29 eye-catching competing garments interplayed various advanced manufacturing techniques with a selection of fur material, illustrating the boldness of the young minds as well as the resourcefulness of fur fashion.

This year, the judging panel was comprised of the Consul-General of the Consulate General of Finland in the HKSAR and Macau, Ms. Annikki Arponen; Trade Commissioner of Italian Trade Commission in the HKSAR, Mrs. Paola Guida; Global Trend and Design Manager of Kopenhagen Fur, Mr. Michael Holm, Managing Director of Cyril Murkin (HK) Ltd., Mr. Timothy W. Everest, Deputy Executive Director of Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Mr. Benjamin Chau, socialites Ms. Marie Zhuge, Ms. Irene Wang, Ms. Flora Cheong-Leen and fashion designer Mr. Dorian Ho.
